On 17 April 1964, Ford unveiled the first-generation Mustang, based on the Ford Falcon platform, as both a coupé and a convertible, thereby creating the ‘pony car’ class that would later be named after it.

As the Mustang was launched in the spring of 1964 – well ahead of the usual October launch of new car models – the first-year Mustang model was also listed as a 1965 model year, although earlier production vehicles can be unofficially referred to as 1964 1/2 models.

According to its chassis number, this Ragoon Red convertible is one of the early models that rolled off the production line as early as 1964. Fitted with the large 289ci V8 (4.7-litre) engine (D-code), it produces 260 bhp according to the vehicle documents. The vehicle was purchased in Los Angeles in 2012 as a restoration project and transported to Germany in this condition. All transport documents, as well as photographs of its condition at the time of discovery, are available.

The Mustang was subsequently subjected to an uncompromising full restoration to German standards, involving a total of around 1,300 working hours. The bodywork, chrome, paintwork, leather and mechanical components were either renewed or completely overhauled. The chassis and axles were also renewed, and as part of this process, the vehicle was retrofitted with disc brakes (front) with a brake booster and power steering. Finally, a valuation report was drawn up, confirming the perfection of the restoration. Naturally, there is also a photo gallery documenting the restoration itself.

In 2014, the current owner acquired the vehicle for his collection. To make it suitable for everyday use, an automatic transmission was fitted during the restoration. However, the original and extremely rare 4-speed manual gearbox is also still available and included in the purchase price.

This beautiful Ford Mustang is now on display in our showroom – a true gem of American motoring history.
