On Sunday, September 13, 2026, Stuttgart became a stage for automotive history. To mark the 70th anniversaries of the Liederhalle and the SWR Television Tower Stuttgart, SML CarGroup hosted a special classic car rally through the city.
Shortly before 9:00 a.m., the first historic vehicles arrived at the SWR Television Tower Stuttgart. The parking area quickly filled with gleaming classics, the unmistakable scent of gasoline and fascinating stories, which SWR1 presenter Stefanie Anhalt drew out of the participants during conversations. Amid lively discussions about the cars and their first impressions, participants were able to enjoy a small breakfast snack and take in the special atmosphere. At the same time, they had the opportunity to visit the SWR Television Tower Stuttgart or take a rare look inside the tower’s foundation, an area that is normally not open to the public.
Shortly after 11:00 a.m., the lead convoy set off. Three historic police motorcycles from the Stuttgart Police Museum escorted Lord Mayor Dr. Frank Nopper and his wife in the rare Mercedes-Benz 300 SC Roadster. Michael Engelmann from SWR followed in a Mercedes-Benz 200 S. Bringing up the rear was a historic police Volkswagen Beetle.
The participating classic cars then set off at intervals of around 30 seconds and made their way through Stuttgart. The route led through Sillenbuch, past the Wine Museum and on to the Württemberg Mausoleum, before continuing through Stuttgart’s vineyards. From Cannstatt, the route passed the Mercedes-Benz plant and the Mercedes-Benz Museum, continuing to the Wasen fairgrounds and then on to the Gaskessel. From there, the route continued past Stuttgart Central Station to the Liederhalle.
Numerous visitors were already waiting there to welcome the arriving classics. On the presentation ramp, SWR1 presenter Petra Klein introduced the vehicles and drew fascinating stories from the participants about their automotive treasures. The participants were personally presented with commemorative plaques and, as a special surprise, five high-quality prizes were awarded among the participants.
Following the presentation, visitors were able to admire the historic vehicles up close in the Liederhalle’s underground parking garage. At the same time, the Liederhalle’s extensive anniversary program invited visitors to explore the building and its history. All guided tours were fully booked, and the anniversary exhibition “Lampenfieber” also attracted considerable interest. Food trucks provided refreshments for participants and visitors, allowing everyone to round off this special day in a relaxed atmosphere.
The anniversary rally thus brought together a passion for automobiles with Stuttgart’s architectural, cultural and urban history – offering a unique way to experience the city’s two 70-year-old landmarks.
